We all hope to age gracefully and enjoy our golden years; however, life is unpredictable. If you suffered a medical catastrophe, would you want your life prolonged by extreme means? Or would you want artificial life support withheld? These are difficult decisions that most people don't like to think about. But if we don't put our wishes in writing, someone else one day may make these choices for us — a spouse, a sibling, or a total stranger such as a social worker or a judge.
This short course will provide helpful insights into questions many people are asking after the death of Terri Schiavo — What is a Living Will? What is a Durable Power of Attorney? Do I need both? Can I use free forms on the Internet? Can a doctor ignore my end-of-life wishes? How do I appoint someone to make sure that my desires are carried out? The course will include a discussion of various end-of-life alternatives, thought-provoking questions that each of us should consider, and links to convenient fill-in forms approved for use in various states across the U.S.
Curriculum: 5 week course. No textbook required. No prerequisites.
Note: This course is intended to be educational and is not a substitute for legal advice. For specific questions on living wills or other issues beyond the scope of this course, an attorney must be consulted.
