Subject: Trying Once Again Author: Rainbow (15 Jun 2008, 4:14pm) |
|
Well I tried some courses last term for the first time in a couple of years and my computer crashed in the middle & I was not able to catch up.
This term am trying the journeling and how to write a press release. Trying not to get to technical this time around. If I have time I will also take the stress course which I could probably use as I answer road side assistant calls at my day job & as the price of gas goes up so does the stress level of the people calling for help & I am finding it harder not to get stressed from people yelling at me all day. Hope you all have a great summer and look foward to seeing some of you in my classes. |

| Yea, I'm from the older set...........It's a state of mind, and you have to go with the flow. Just finished 'Lost Odyssey' with my gamer son, and it was fun. No job is a problem these days, but I say look for something you like... |
|
Subject: Re: Being old Author: Joi (13 Jun 2008, 7:48pm) |
| Well, I am not currently looking for a job and I am not sure what defines the "older set" so perhaps I am not qualified to answer? I know if I was in a position of not having to totally support myself with my income from working I would look for something I just totally enjoyed and had a passion for? I think when you have that passion it just comes through and any job you have no matter how "menial" or how "elite" you will be respected; at least, by the one who counts, yourself. |

| Hi! I'm Andrea. I'm a wife and mother of 2 children ( stay at home mother ) and live up in Minnesota. Have been out of school for nearly 5 years now. My husband's grandmother told us about this place and thought I'd check it out. I'm not quite sure how the credits work or anything like that but at least it'll help me get back in the swing of things and help me transition into school while still taking care of my children. Hope y'all have a great week. love and luck . |
|
Subject: Re: what's up dudie? Author: Bonnie (12 Jun 2008, 9:28pm) |
| Hi Andrea. The quality is sure here at VU. Their courses are worthwhile. Even though I am very busy (I live on Vancouver Island, BTW), I want to hone my learning skills and may take a distance learning credit course at Athabasca University eventually because I will have taught my brain to think faster and remember better. In mid-life, these things take practise again. We are older trucks but we still want to make noises, ha. I think doing these classes 3 at a time is a great confidence booster, for sure. Have a great time. |

I am a mother of two under the age of 5 and this is really a godsend for me seeing as though I can't afford to enroll in a university. I've just begun with these classes as they interested me quite a bit. |

Hi Barbara.
I am a little north of you on Vancouver Island. Taking 3 courses at a time gives me a self-confidence boost. I am pretty busy but teaching myself to make time blocks only for VU. I recommend the school to everyone, even some of my own private reading improvement students. All the best and I think you will be back each semester. |
|
Subject: Re: First timer Author: Barbara (12 Jun 2008, 10:56pm) |

Thanks Bonnie,
I appreciate your thoughts about this, and look forward to giving this a serious try. Given the range of courses here and the community I see so far, I wouldn't be surprised if you were right and I did keep coming back! What course(s) are you taking this time? As much as I'm partial to Portland, I'm awed by the beauty of where you live. I've been up that way a couple of times, and was recently looking at going there again. Take care, Barbara |

Do you actually visit Victoria over on the Island, or the mainland (Vancouver)? There's a lot of difference. We get a lot less rain than Vancouver area. We live in Sooke--west side of the southern tip. Very friendly town and quite beautiful with the mountains in Washington in view.
I am taking Intro to Colour Theory, Express Yourself! 35 Days to Better Writing, and Write Right: Essential Grammar and Style. What about you? |
|
Subject: Re: First timer Author: Barbara (13 Jun 2008, 7:06pm) |

I made it to Vancouver, just the mainland. Went once with my family as a
child, then again 12 years ago. I recently made it up as far as Bellingham WA, teasingly close but not quite. I'm taking Cascading Style Sheets, Javascript, and the course on "getting organized." |
|
Subject: Re: First timer Author: Eagle |
| Welcome. So you already know HTML and have a website? You will need them to do the CSS and Javascript assignments. I would prefer for the Javascript classes that you do the exercises on their own pages. Of course you can incorporate the scripts into existing pages, once they are working on their own. See you in class. |

Hi, thanks for the welcome!
I've had a website up for over a decade now, learned html in an interactive online website to do them. But I feel like I've been a "baby geek," not really progressing much beyond basic html. I'm looking forward to learning more advanced website building skills, beginning (though probably not ending) with these courses. I'll plan to set up separate pages for the Javascript exercises. Thanks, looking forward to the class! |

Hi all,
I have taken classes here before but it's been a couple of years. I signed up for the How to Be Organized, How to Write a Living Will, and for fun...Intro to Colour Therapy. I suffer from clinical depression and had to drop out of college for a while. I thought these classes might help for me to 1. get organized for college again, and B. get used to being in class again. I also work full time as an IT Tech at a hospital. I am a mother of 2 grown children, and I have 3 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild is on the way - due in Nov. Rockie |

Hi, Rockie. wow, you're a busy lady and congrats on your grandchild--well, grandchildren.
ne thing about these courses is they aren't pressure courses like college courses can be, so, it's neat you're using these courses to get back in the swing of things. |

Well welcome Rockie, i am new, i tried to take courses in 2007 but did not have a credit card, and the methods to pay here is a bit difficult especially. I do not live in the us, i have a paypal account and i will be happy to pay using it but they do not have it, so i might try this free course.
Tell us how are the classes here, are they interactive? |

Hi Coolghost (I love that nick!)
I found this info for you= If you live outside the U.S. and you don't use credit cards, there are several convenient payment alternatives, depending on where you reside: Europe – you can mail a cheque, bank draft or money order payable in British Pounds or Euros. Canada – personal cheques are acceptable. Please write "US Dollars" after the amount. Japan and Canada – you can remit by International Postal Money Order. Worldwide – You can purchase a Western Union money order and mail it to us. Western Union's fee for a money order is usually much less than a wire transfer. Click to locate a Western Union office near you. Hope this helps KOT |
|
Subject: Re: Newbie, sort of Author: Rockie (11 Jun 2008, 1:42pm) |
|
As I remember, they are interactive. There should be a class room/chat room where students and the teachers go to talk. I am not sure how it's run now but I would imagine it to be the same.
Will they not let you mail in a check for your payment? Rockie |
|
Subject: Re: Newbie, sort of Author: KOT (11 Jun 2008, 6:26pm) |
|
Yep, you're right Rockie, there's a discussion board for each class where you ask questions, post homework, and get to know your classmates. It's really fun to meet everyone.
You can mail in a check; it just takes longer for the payment to go thru. You can Contact VU registrar through the email link on your desk. Helpful info here http://vu.org/handbook.html Main rule here is to Have Fun! Learning cool stuff with interesting folks is Fun!

Hi everyone I've tried VU three times in the past, and all three times, I've gotten too busy or just plain forgot, and never completed a course. This time, I want to complete my courses! I'm taking How to Develop a Marketing Plan - that's the one I really, truly want to finish. As for the other two, well, I'm still waffling. I've currently signed up for HTML 1 and Writing for the Web, as those seem like a good pair of courses to take together, but I might change my mind. I'm particularly interested in Bhagavad Gita and Vitamins.... or Egyptian Mythology... Keep smiling! |

Plus, I teach art and my summer camps start soon.. But I am still excited about taking the courses and beginning soon! I get up at four A.M. but there is just not enough time in the day... I am also very interested in Egyptian Mythology and the Bhagavad Gita. I actually took a course on the Goddess and that was wonderful and eye openning... | Life is stressful even though I am retired with enough money to live on, with free medical aid because I live in the UK, and at the moment the sun is shining. The problem is that I worry about the world I am leaving for my 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. It seems to me that my generation has had the best of times. OK,there was the world war and people I knew were killed or injured. I had to join the Royal Navy which wrenched me out of the quite life that I had been living and thrust me into a cold, hard world but it made me grow up fast and cope with all the problems that I met. But now, am I leaving a world which is doomed to extinction, where fossil fuels are running out and where the possibility of life becoming harder for the younger generation? I am interested to know how one copes with these negative thoughts. |

Hi. Your negative thoughts are very real issues. The only way I know to deal with them is to get out and do something about them.... If nothing else, at least try not to be part of the problem by doing things like recycling and such....
Just keep smiling, that'll get you through the day |

| As I always say "so glad I'm leaving and not coming!" When I started flying on jets such as Comet from England it was linen and silverware on the "table" and choice of chicken or beef dinners with glass cutlery! Now no food and pay extra to sit by a window!! Is that progress? Is that stress?? |

Good to see you back Shel. What are you taking this time around?

You've been hanging around this school even longer than me! Keep up the good work you are certainly providing them with a dedicated teaching resource. Believe I just signed up for your Open Office courses. Have been using Writ for spell checking and page pasting for several years. About time to learn what other capabilities are provided just in case its useful for those old web sites I have promised to rebuild before I'm 80! Also going for power tools again to see the latest and maybe develop a package for the senior center computers we fix up for sales. The stress course will round out the total and interested more in what is stress than how to handle. Thanks for the comeback and very pleased your still around to help. |

Sounds like the new class - Self-Help for Stress - might be helpful.

| Finally decided on what classes I'd take this time around. Intro to Meditation and How To Develop a Marketing Plan, along with the free course --Self-Help For Stress. It was time to challenge the brain matter again. Looking forward to seeing everyone back in the "halls". Have a great day! |

The Marketing class is great. It really gets you going on the whole process. Lots of work but well worth it. Then you can lay back and Meditate |

Hi, Arlene,
I took the Write Right course last time. There is sure a lot of quality in these courses. Very exciting to feel like going to university again at 60, I can say. How do you manage to fit the course into your busy life (we all are busy--too busy)? Is there a special block of time you use that wasn't used for anything before? Just trying to pick up tips myself. This is odd. I've heard of phishing scams and keep away from them on line.
Yesterday I got one under my door. I told me I had won so much on the Spanish Lottery, just like the spam message on line. But, this time, they enclosed a form on which I was expected to put all my personal data. Oddly it was enclosed in an envelope with a Spanish stamp but that envelope had been franked last year, though I had "won" only last month. So I think the envelopes were brought here empty and then filled and the addresses printed on them here. This could happen in any country, I expect. |

Yes, these things also happen here in the Netherlands!
Always be very careful filling in personal data. Also be careful when they tell you you have won something, but in order to get it, you'll have to pay or buy something! Thanks for this reminder. Love from the Netherlands, Lia |

Thanks.Lia, I'll be taking the security class, too.
I have always found the classes here at V.U very good. I find that if I'm interested in the internet that I can find many interesting reports useful for security on the BBC site, international edition on the page devoted to Technology. I expect you know it. By coincidence Spain has featured recently! Well, it is Monday here already on our side of the International Dateline so I look forward to Tuesday, to start. |

I went to our Central Library and re borrowed MS Windows Simplified Visual Paul Mc Fedries a very good book for those who like computer advice pictures. I also got out my favourite computer book from there. Computer Security for the Home and Small Office Thomas C Greene Always worth looking at. Looking forward to HTML 1 again. M E |
