Judy Holsted Oldziewski

Judy Holsted Oldziewski co-mentors Introduction to
Genealogy. She was raised and attended college in Oklahoma and currently
resides in Southern California.
"I am now retired after working thirty-one years for the State of California."
Judy states. "My husband does not share my interest in family history but keeps
busy with his own hobbies. In addition to genealogy, I enjoy reading and I'm an
active volunteer in my community.
"I was lucky to have grandparents who told stories about the family that reached
back to the Civil War," Judy recalls. "My interest in my family history grew out
of listening to those stories."

Shelina Virjee co-mentors Introduction to Genealogy. She says that she has
two obsessions which compete for her attention quilting and genealogy.
"I have been conducting genealogy for more than 25 years for many
different families (not just those related to me), including
Germans, Irish, Welsh, and African-American," reports Shelina. "I have produced
books to show my results and for five years, I produced Evans Events,
a genealogy newsletter."
Shelina says that she can be found near her tired old computer in Columbus, Ohio, reading
newsgroups, looking up more quilt patterns, and adopting more
relatives.

Lorraine Gardner
Springfield, Missouri

Lorraine Gardner mentors Spanish for Beginners. She graduated
from Creighton University in Nebraska with a minor in Spanish. She has taught
Conversational Spanish for adults and now teaches French and Spanish to high
school students through distance learning (via the Internet and on Interactive
TV). A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Lorraine presently lives in Springfield, Missouri.
Her main hobbies are music (progressive rock/metal), traveling, reading, and
learning other languages.
"I have been interested in learning languages since I was young," Lorraine says.
"I learned some basic Spanish from Sesame Street, and I knew then that I wanted
to learn more. I started taking Spanish and French classes when I was 12, and I
have also studied Latin, Classical Greek, Korean, and Portuguese. I would still
like to learn German and Italian, and possibly some other langauges as well. I
think learning another language is a great way to connect with people and
understand more about the world we live in, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge of
languages with others."

Dan Sweetland
Indiana

Dan Sweetland mentors Introduction to Philosophy, helping VU students
develop critical thinking skills and understand the fine points of logic and
reason.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Dan graduated from the University of Wisconsin at
Milwaukee in 2001 with a degree in Film. His teaching
interests include History, Philosophy, Art, Literature, and the ancillary skills
of interpreting any kind of media and ideas. He has taught film and
has also worked as a tutor in History and Geography.
"After my degree, I studied Medical Ethics at Notre Dame, which introduced me to
the canon of Western Philosophy and some moral theology," Dan recalls. "I have
taken numerous courses in literature; I am an avid reader and writer. I
also have experience
as an English teacher for
Kaplan Test Prep, preparing college graduates for the verbal section of the GRE."

Tanvir Lodi
Karachi, Pakistan

Tanvir Lodi mentors The Truth About Islam. He has been
mentoring classes at VU since 2003.
"Assalam-o-Alykum, I am Tanvir from Karachi Pakistan. I am 35 years
old. I am in the field of IT since 1989." Tanvir writes. "I love to work on
computers and in my free time have a go at a game of Badminton as
well. Take care, and hopefully I will see you in the Truth About Islam
class. Let's see if we can cut the media hype and discover what Islam
really is!"
